Frederick Douglass (formerly Nicholls) High School may be about to close

Here are some notes from the last meeting:

A group of 12 met on April 17th at ACORN headquarters:
We will have another meeting April 29 at 6pm at Douglass, probably in the auditorium. Reggie will call and get it reserved. This will be our final strategy meeting before the May 6 meeting.

Before this meeting we hope to mobilize many more people by using flyers, the radio, Reggie's interview with Gambit, and other outreach.

Gloria DeCuir-Robert went to Douglass this afternoon and got three pages of signed petitions including security guards, students and others. She is going to get a list of parents and work with that as well.

Jim Randels is going to talk with Karen Harper at Carver to see if they want to join with us - one plan we discussed would be to house Carver and Douglass students together at Douglass while Carver is rebuilt, then vice versa. Jim advocates a return of Douglass to NOPS. We should possibly also talk with people at Thurgood Marshall.

name of group: SOS: Frederick Douglass

Ze' daLuz is going to try to get the repair estimate from Concordia. She will also write an article for the May issue of BNA newsletter and publicize meeting thru the BNA email list. I will also contact WWOZ for publicity. Also she will make up a flyer for the meeting which Christopher said he could copy.

Gwen Adams will get publicity from WBOK and other radio stations.

The petitions as written says 1. We are against the closure of Douglass; 2. We support a core curriculum at Douglass that focuses on college prep, fine arts and community service training; and 3. We opposed moving 9th graders to the Holy Cross site which is unsuitable for learning.

We will need to formalize our exact demands to see if those are it or it we want to return Douglass to NOPS or what exactly we do want. We talked a lot about this but did not make decisions.
